But people can see you. And no you aren’t in your shower or dancing in front of mirror with a hair brush microphone. And no you don’t have a good voice. That’s why you’re not in the band.
If you turn around and notice that there is a 3 foot ring of people NOT around you it’s because everyone else doesn’t want to get hit by one of your rock convulses that are apparently necessary for you to enjoy the show. (It also kinda makes you seem autistic. I wondered last night if at least three people in the audience were autistic.)

Go crazy at shows. Sing, dance, drink, flail, have fun and don’t worry about what other people think. Ever.
But some of you should remember that you’re there to enjoy the band – not audition.
Also, what was with the clapping? I’ve never seen a band whose fans had so little rhythm. The unison clapping (normally something I enjoy) was hilariously off almost to the point where I thought the crowd was trying to mess with the band.
Anyways, the TA show as I mentioned came to me in waves. Some of the songs sounded fantastic – even on the porch. But something about last nights sound was a little off, a little flat. The band played good but last night was not the Titus Andronicus concert I expected and I’m not sure why.
Guitarist/Violinist Amy had an amp blow out during the first song which was kinda funny but someone had an amp and saved the day. Nice. 
It was a good gig, I’m glad people that are real fans of this band showed up and had a great time.
I’m not complaining about TA’s show last night; something just didn’t seem right to me but that’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy the show.
All I’ll say is that I’m really excited for the next Titus Andronicus show I get to see.

For those that don’t know Tuesday is when all the new records are released to the stores and it is a great day.
What’s not to love?
The smell of fresh vinyl wafting through the air – mixing with the other Earthly aromas that usually accompany any good record store. Stressed Record Shop employees frantically pricing their new arrivals while simultaneously screaming at why they even received copies of a certain album they don’t personally like only to have it snatched up by some goofball before it can even reach the floor; further exasperating said Record Store employee.
It’s all part of the American experience and as I’ve previously mentioned… Totally Great.

Fans of ambient/dreampop were treated to a hazy, reverb-drenched triple feature Wednesday night at The Loft. As summertime winds down and we usher in a new season of cooler temperatures (only 74 degrees last night, Yay!) and the melancholy of Fall, the setting and timing of these performances made this moody showcase the place to be on this night. Unfortunately, debilitating sound issues throughout Memoryhouse’s set slowed the momementum of what was turning out to be something epic.

Opening Act Sleep∞Over – Having formed less then a year ago, Austin’s Sleep∞Over have seen underground success with a cassette only EP and their Outer Limits 7” With hopes of releasing an LP in the near future, the 3 ladies of Sleep∞Over must have set the tone early, as I missed their entire set even though I arrived by 9pm. My only glimpse of Sleep∞Over was their presence behind the merch table. Frown

Next up was Long Island’s Twin Sister. This quintet of youthful looking musicians sounded quite polished, and produced some of the louder,more raucous moments of the evening. Singer Andrea Estella always managed to settle things down though, with tambourine jangles and whispery vocals reminiscent at times of Dolores O’Riordan, Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead, and even Kim Gordon. Twin Sister’s set, for those familiar, was comprised mostly of selections from their latest EP Color Your Life. It’s this kind of engaging performance that gives a young band longevity and relevance. Check ‘em out.

Guelph Ontario’s Memoryhouse, the headliner and most anticipated band of the evening, was plagued by monitor issues from the get-go resulting in something I’d never experienced before at a gig. They played their entire set, bass heavy drum samples, shimmering guitar solos, compelling vox and all, before deciding that the sound wasn’t up to snuff and awkwardly repeated some tunes over again. As one of the 60 or so attendees, I thought it sounded fine and very close to their buzz worthy EP The Years. Since The Years has been on heavy rotation with me for a few months, I’m still unsure whether or not it’s a bad thing to have been treated to album versions and acoustic renditions of these gorgeous compositions. “Lately” sounded beautiful yet haunting both times thru. I chatted up singer Denise Nouvion before the show and asked how they were able to sample Jon Brion’s “Phone Call” from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, for this standout track on their album. She explained with her 19 year old charm that only 4 seconds were actually used and that bandmate Evan Abeele removed the string arrangement also. The resulting feedback has been quite positive on record and live, even spurring a music video with over 32,000 views.

Despite the malfunctions and false starts, Memoryhouse maintained composure and aced every track from The Years. Then a few untitled new songs meshed into the setlist, possibly even their next single “Caregiver” due in September on Suicide Squeeze Records. I haven’t heard it yet, but could it have been one of these tunes? Finally, no set would be complete without a few covers thrown in for good measure. My Bloody Valentine’s “When You Sleep” and Grizzly Bear’s “Foreground” concluded the evening on an optimistic note for both hypnotized audience members and an impromptu Memoryhouse.

It’s safe to say that all three bands on the bill, Sleep∞Over, Twin Sister and Memoryhouse, could list Cocteau Twins, The Velvet Underground and more currently Beach House as influences. Listen to any of their recordings streaming on the web and without question, you too will hear it and make the connection. Wow that rhymed! Like it or not, this genre is gaining alot of new followers and may also be the best sleep aid/relaxer since Ambien. Not to say that it’s a boring listen, or a bland live show. More like ethereal textures to coat your every movement.
