I felt a mix of disgust and relief as I entered the Granada Theater on Friday night. I was disgusted because I missed Leg Sweeper. I don’t think there’s a band that I’ve “just missed ‘em” more than Leg Sweeper but I got out of work late. The number one excuse for concert related tardiness.
Leg Sweeper, weren’t originally on the bill though, Infinity Cat‘s Jeff the Brotherhood were supposed to open up for Best Coast but guitarist, Jake Orrall broke his arm…playing basketball.

Busting your arm playing b-ball doesn’t sound very punk rock until you think about Jake’s hair blowing in the wind mid-layup. That mental image helps you realize that the situation is actually pretty punk. And hilarious.

This is also funny.

Anyways, a bunch of people up there said that Leg Sweeper killed it. I am not surprised.

I may have missed my beloved Leg Sweeper but the relief I mentioned earlier washed over me in a massive wave as I realized that I would finally get to see my other DFW music obsession, Mind Spiders.

I have been really into this band since they started up and I was hoping (needing, really – it was a long day) their show would be great and it was – but not in the way that I expected.

Mind Spiders, the Metroplex’s premier all-star punk band jumped out to a great start but something seemed off to me. The drums were loose but he was on – a great style for this type of band. Bassist, Daniel Fried (whose playing style reminds me of Dee Dee Ramone) sounded great. Guitars and keys were killing it and Mark Ryan’s vocals sounded good but still, something was troubling me.

The problem I had was that the band sounded more like a bear hug as opposed to the controlled punch that they deliver on their records. I wanted it tight and dark but it was expansive…oceanic maybe??
I don’t know if that makes sense but the band sounded huge.

Apparently, the band was late and didn’t get to sound check; if that’s the case their set was actually rather impressive and speaks to the very well-practiced vibe they produced.  I would not describe this set as disappointing however; if anything it made me want to see them more. I want to see these guys in a really small, dark, drunk, sweaty situation – I need that “Lynchian” intensity amped up and thrown under a microscope.

I’m sure I’ll get it because I am going to watch Mind Spiders as often as I can.

Oh and for those who are wondering what the Best Coast set was like…“Girls” airs Sunday evenings on HBO.
